Hello, I'm Renee Higbee! I have 20+ years of experience in the field of Deaf Education as an educator, advocate, and sign language interpreter. My experience with ASL/Deaf Culture is mixed with professional and personal experience ranging from teaching ASL courses in K-12 public/charter/private school settings, interpreting in K-12 education settings, collegiate interpreting, religious/community interpreting, to working as the Parent/Family Liaison for the Idaho Educational Services for the Deaf and Blind.
I hold three degrees, a M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Idaho, BS in Educational Interpreting from Idaho State University and a BA in Humanities from Washington State University. I'm proud to label myself as a life-long-learner! Personally, I am passionate about teaching and advocating, as I have the privilege of raising a son who is profoundly deaf, uses a cochlear implant, and we sign as a family.
Navigating support services through K-12 public education and the collegiate academic setting through understanding/applying the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, is an extraordinary honor. With experience on both sides of the educational table, as a parent and a professional, I understand the complex issues that surround providing the right support in the home as well as at school.
My husband Doug and I have been married for 26 years and have two wonderful adult children. Both of them earned degrees from the University of Idaho. Go, Vandals! In my spare time, I enjoy running, hiking/camping/backpacking in the Sawtooth mountains and paddle boarding.
